We ate dinner last night in the temporary commercial district. After ramen and “butadon” in structures similar to the nearby temporary housing units, we were treated to an impromptu Japanese folk music show! The musicians are part of a family business who lost their restaurant in the tsunami. The local business association helped them build this temporary structure to use until the community of Ofunato decides where and how to rebuild. It opened in December 2011, nine months after the Tohoku earthquake/tsunami, and is a favorite place for volunteers and locals alike.
